The idea for Clubland Smashed came about when Tuffcub (DJ from London we've known for years) approached us wanting to do a mix album for our label, the idea quickly developed into us all collaborating on a mash-up album. An idea inspired by the Megabass and DMC cut-up albums from back in the day, and our history of producing bootleg remixes and mashups, a past we'll never be forgotten for!
In our formative years as The FNP we produced just over 100 mashups between 1998 and 2001, for this album we produced 50 brand new ones in 3 months! I'm not sure if anyone is actually supposed to enjoy compiling & mixing a compilation album, but we certainly did! However I don't think any of us realised what we were getting in to when we started work on Smashed It was at a "finished" stage at least 3 times before we were told to remove tracks that couldn't be cleared, and when you're asked to remove 1 song it messes up a mashup that could contain up to 3 other songs! It was a headache shared not just by us but everyone at AATW who were doing their level best to clear all the 120+ songs for the album.
I think it put us back by almost a month, it was a close call as well, in the final week Tuffcub didn't sleep for 60 hours, Scott was yoyoing back & forth to the studio, I was practically living in the studio and mastering the album literally the night before the final deadline. Having said that, we enjoyed every second of it and I cannot wait to get my teeth in to the next Smashed album!
